The Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards were presented to recognize outstanding use of environmental themes in the following categories:
In addition, the Turner Prize, initiated by the Turner Foundation, was presented to the writer(s) of the prime time television episode that best dealt with the issue of population growth or the empowerment of women. Rob Schneider served as Master of Ceremony. We were proud to present the inaugural EMA Futures Award to Edward Norton. Edward is spearheading a wonderful new initiative with EMA and the Enterprise Foundation (a Foundation founded by his grandfather). Edward and EMA will identify celebrities to purchase solar panels for their homes and bp solar will donate systems to low-income homes that Enterprise identifies. This campaign not only uses celebrity to educate and motivate the public, but also benefits an underserved community. The EMA Missions in Music Award was given to Alanis Morissette. Alanis has used her voice to speak out against the current Administration's proposal for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. At her concerts and on her website she has encouraged fans to learn about the Bush Energy Plan and urged them to send letters to Congress. Over the years, Alanis has displayed a passionate take on activism and a dedicated commitment to humanitarian and environmental causes. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Inc., was the Presenting Sponsor of the Thirteenth Annual EMA Awards held in Los Angeles on November 5, 2003. Toyota's commitment to future technology is nothing less than extraordinary. With more than 140,000 of the wildly popular Toyota Prius gas/electric hybrid cars on the road, Toyota is now introducing its second-generation Prius. The 2004 Prius is bigger, more powerful, more fuel-efficient and nearly 90 percent cleaner than the average vehicle on the road. As a corporation, Toyota's attention to environmental concerns is stellar. bp solar was again our Partner Sponsor. Their commitment to solar, low sulfur fuel and alternative energy makes them a stand out in their field. Other event sponsors included: Audubon Society, Aveda, Bonterra Vineyards, CAA, Earthbound Farm, Guess?, Inc., Odwalla, Organic Valley Family of Farms, Silk Soymilk, Seventh Generation, The Patron Spirits Co., Tiffany & Co., Trinity Springs Water, The Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. and Whole Foods Market. In addition, to celebrate our environmental message, we continued our tradition of serving an organic, gourmet meal prepared by premier Los Angeles chefs: Akasha Richmond (Akasha's Visionary Cuisine), Mary Sue Milliken & Susan Feniger (Border Grill & Ciudad), Mark Peel & Nancy Silverton (Campanile & La Brea Bakery), Ben Ford (Chadwick Catering), Neal Fraser (GRACE), Hallee Gould & Alan Jackson (Jackson's Somerset Catering), Suzanne Tracht (Jar), Joe Miller (Joe's), Chris Blobaum (Surf & Sand Resort), Govind Armstrong (Table 8), Jim Whitney (Whole Foods Market), and for our vegan guests, Ann Gentry & David Anderson (Real Food Daily). They all worked together with food donated from Whole Foods Market. We also continued our custom of creating an event atmosphere that's not only hip and fun, but also educational and inspiring. |
