EMA and LAUSD: GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL GARDENS

Calvert Street Elementary School

Calvert Street Elementary is in the process of designing and building its new gardens and hopes to become a model on how to garden and manage green space within a school. The school of 400 students has put in native plant garden, has xeriscaped its perimeter, and is set to begin working on its next project. What is now two bungalows on asphalt will become the new farm/learning garden that will host all of the children.

The garden work thus far has already drawn the attention of the community as local families have begun to re-enroll their children at the school. The school will only be more invigorated as the next phase of garden is added to the campus.

Calvert Elementary has made vast improvements to their schoolyard garden.
They started with a few plots for trees...

...And expanded to implementing a xeriscaped greenbelt - local plants that require minimal water.

Still in progress, they have high expectations for their school garden.
