EMA and LAUSD: GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL GARDENS
Carson Senior High School
The Carson Senior High School garden is approximately one acre in size and in any given year some 300 to 400 students use the garden. Situated near the severely disabled classroom, the garden is unique in its interaction with special needs and autistic children and has successfully fostered developmental and socialization skills in them.
The garden boasts a variety of crops including apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, bananas, taro, sunflowers and grapes among many others. A new grape arbor was constructed in the center of the garden and provides a shady sitting area amongst the plants. Up next for the garden, if funds can be raised, is an outdoor kitchen for the students to use in their studies.
