The Environmental Media Association believes that through television, film and music, the entertainment community has the power to influence the environmental awareness of millions of people. This initial concept set the stage for our 1989 launch and it remains a core EMA tenant today.
EMA mobilizes the entertainment industry in educating people about environmental issues, which in turn, inspires them to take action. A pioneer in linking the power of celebrity to environmental awareness, it was EMA who invented the ‘green carpet,’ launching the concept of taking a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle - not a limo - to high profile awards events and bringing the concept of alternative automotive technology to millions of previously unaware households.
A venerable liaison between the entertainment industry and the environmental community, our role is active and diverse. The annual EMA Awards honor film and television personalities, productions, musicians and musical tours that convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways. The EMA Green Seal Awards honor productions and corporate entertainment offices that go green ‘behind the scenes.’ In tandem with the Green Seal Awards, EMA offers practical guidance on how the entertainment industry and individuals can green their day-to-day lives.
Throughout the year, we participate in and create celebrity-driven eco-focused events and salons that garner vital media and public attention. We regularly network with writers, directors and producers, helping shape plotlines that seamlessly incorporate environmental messages. The work that we have done for almost 20 years has helped inspire millions of people to reduce air pollution, ensure clean water for drinking and recreation, protect endangered species, preserve open spaces, minimize waste, promote a safe food supply (go organic!) and live more environmentally sustainable lives.
EMA’s network of environmentally-conscious celebrities, tastemakers, not-for-profit organizations and corporations continues to be one of our greatest assets. From Hollywood royalty to the hottest new celebrities to cutting-edge businesses that work towards environmental change every day, EMA is a powerful force that brings powerful people together on the path to a healthier planet.
EMA is a non-profit 501(c)3 founded in 1989 by Cindy and Alan Horn and Lyn and Norman Lear
Linking the power of celebrity to environmental awareness, EMA believes that through television, film and music, the entertainment community can affect change in a positive way. EMA’s work is widespread, from subtle messaging on the screen to promoting sustainable lifestyle choices and educating influential people on the power of “green,” our goal is inspiring the path to a healthier planet.
The annual EMA Awards is the only program singularly devoted to celebrating the entertainment industry’s creative environmental efforts. The EMA Awards honor productions, film and television personalities, musicians and musical tours that convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways.
EMA and Green Seal have teamed up in 2009 for an exciting new partnership. The EMA Green Seal program permits the Environmental Media Association to simultaneously promote sustainable production methods and highlight those in the industry who’ve made strides incorporating such practices into both film and television productions.
EMA advises celebrities and entertainment professionals on thought-provoking, attention-getting ways to role model healthy, sustainable lifestyles to the general public. Whether driving a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle or carrying a canvas bag, EMA encourages celebrities to use their power to inspire environmentally responsible behavior and affect positive change.
From updates on environmental issues to profiles on green businesses to the latest green industry services, Green Light covers those who live, work and play within the entertainment community’s dynamic eco scene.
Whether we’re hosting, in attendance as an expert speaker, or collaborating with scientific experts in the field, if the event combines eco and entertainment, EMA is there.
From running an environmentally conscious production, to living an eco lifestyle everyday, to the definitive online guide to ‘greening’ television and movie plotlines, EMA delivers experience-based tips and tools on all things eco within the entertainment community and beyond. EMA meets one on one to assist creative teams in their delivery of environmental themes.
EMA has been at the forefront in working closely with the corporate world to move the environmental agenda forward. By supporting companies that incorporate environmental business practices and offer sustainable products, we not only put a spotlight on their products, but also encourage their competitors to follow suit. EMA’s credo: We can all change the world through shopping!
The EMA Green Seal program recognizes green film and television productions. Recognition is provided following independent, third party verification of a production’s adherence to sustainable production standards.
Developed in partnership with the premier green certification non-profit organization, Green Seal, Inc., the program covers all facets of a production and provides filmmakers a practical and comprehensive set of criteria for environmentally responsible filmmaking. In each area of focus, the criteria include specific environmental initiatives in order to help producers prioritize where to focus their greening efforts.
The EMA Green Seal program is designed to be flexible enough that any production can potentially qualify, regardless of budget or size.

Cover Story: EMA 2009 HIGHLIGHTS In 1988 we were a concept. By 1989 we were born. Twenty years later our mission is being heard by a global audience. When we began, no one had email. Forget the Internet. In fact, cell phones were still a luxury. The world was not small. Very few people recycled. Hybrids were a concept, not a car. Global warming? And green was most definitely NOT cool. Things have changed. But we're still a work in progress. We all live in a "world" that is conscious, but we live in a big country…. A big earth. There are habits to change, people to educate and inspire. We have a lot of work to do. After twenty years, we're still just beginning........... continued » |
