About the EMA Green Seal Program

The EMA Green Seal program permits the Environmental Media Association to simultaneously promote sustainable production methods and highlight those in the industry who’ve made strides incorporating such practices into both film and television productions.

The program recognizes green film and television productions. Recognition is provided following independent, third party verification of a production’s adherence to sustainable production standards.

Developed in partnership with the premier green certification non-profit organization, Green Seal, Inc., the program covers all facets of a production and provides filmmakers a practical and comprehensive set of criteria for environmentally responsible filmmaking. In each area of focus, the criteria include specific environmental initiatives in order to help producers prioritize where to focus their greening efforts.

The EMA Green Seal program is designed to be flexible enough that any production can potentially qualify, regardless of budget or size.

  • About Green Seal, Inc

The EMA Green Seal is determined on a scale of 150 points and in addition to the mandatory requirements of the program, a minimum threshold of 35 points must be obtained in order to receive EMA Green Seal recognition.

Following the submission of a full and complete application, a site visit to the production is required for recognition to be conferred. The visit allows Green Seal auditors to verify, first hand, the practices put in place and allows the auditor to interview a representative of the production. Prior to the visit, the Green Seal representative will request any formal documentation that may be required as proof of certain criteria being met. The site visit should not last more than half a day and will not interrupt the production. There is currently no charge to the productions for the site visit or for the recognition itself.

In order to apply for an EMA Green Seal recognition please completely fill out the "Award Criteria" tab on the "EMA Green Seal Application." The criteria are stated in the affirmative, thus if the production is employing an initiative, it should leave that checkbox as is. The applicant should write in the “comments” section which of the criteria that do not apply to their production – with N/A. Green Seal auditors will evaluate all other criteria to determine if the production qualifies.
For more detailed instructions for how to apply, please see the “Introduction” tab on the EMA Green Seal application.

Application Timeline: To provide adequate time for a Green Seal representative to plan and carry out a site visit, please send in the completed application before production is scheduled to begin. Coordination of a site visit will usually require two or three weeks of lead-time.
* For recognition at the 2010 EMA Awards please complete and submit the application before August 30, 2010.

Founded in 1989, Green Seal provides science-based environmental certification standards that are credible, transparent, and essential in an increasingly educated and competitive marketplace. Green Seal’s industry knowledge and standards help manufacturers, purchasers, and end users alike make responsible choices that positively impact business behavior and improve quality of life.

A 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, Green Seal issued its first environmental standards in 1991-2, and the first product certifications were completed in 1992. Thousands of products and services from major companies such as 3M, Clorox, and Andersen Windows have now been certified to meet Green Seal standards, and the number of major product categories covered by standards has increased to more than 114.

Today, Green Seal has established a significant market among government agencies, universities, restaurants/food services, and the lodging and architectural building industries. Green Seal actively advises and assists these institutions and industry sectors in their efforts to green their purchasing, operations, and facilities management functions.
