Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Green Partnership Program recognized by World Travel and Tourism Council

We all travel. And, we all live as green as possible. So what makes more sense than when traveling, to visit the most luxurious and greenest of hotels and resorts? At the 6th Annual Global Travel and Tourism Summit in Washington, D.C., EMA's partners, the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts were named winners of the prestigious 2006 Global Tourism Business Award, presented by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTCC, the global business leaders forum for the travel and tourism industry). This Award recognizes and promotes the world's leading examples of best practice in responsible tourism development.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts have been dedicated environmental stewards since 1990 with the development of the company's comprehensive Green Partnership program, designed to minimize the hotels' operating impacts on the environment. The program focuses on improvements in the areas of waste management, energy and water conservation, habitat protection, purchasing as well as a strong element of community outreach through local groups and partnerships. Recently, the brand launched wind powered check-in by purchasing Eco-Logo certified wind power, from the Pembina Institute, for front desk computers at its North American properties, resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction of almost 100 tonnes over the next year! In addition, guests now have opportunities to “go green” through programs and packages that offer enriching experiences, such as saving sea turtles in Mexico and the Caribbean, preserving a nature trail in Sonoma County, California, and educational activities for children across the portfolio.

Chris Cahill, President & COO of Fairmont said "We're very proud to have Fairmont's industry leading Green Partnership program recognized with this prestigious accolade. The WTTC Award is a credit to our colleagues worldwide, dedicated environmental stewards who are passionate about protecting the natural and cultural resources of our unique destinations, while ensuring a quality guest experience."

The Global Tourism Business Award, through the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards program, is given to a tourism business that “demonstrates sound environmental operations and management, educates guests about areas visited, supports cultural and historical preservation, promotes partnerships between public and private stakeholders and is committed to sustainable development that encompasses social, environmental and cultural aspects.” The Awards are sponsored by the WTTC, whose membership is comprised of global business leaders in the travel and tourism industry, including British Airways, American Express and Raffles International. The WTCC's mission is to raise awareness of the full economic impact of the travel and tourism industry and is the only body representing the private sector in all parts of the travel and tourism industry worldwide.

Fairmont is committed to protecting the environment because it isn't just something that's “out there.” They understand, like we do at EMA, that the environment is not only the future we leave to our children, but the present that we need to cherish today. Pioneered by the company's Canadian properties in 1990, the Award-winning Fairmont Green Partnership program is now growing internationally. In addition to publishing "The Green Partnership Guide", a green handbook for the hospitality industry, individual Fairmont hotels and their employee Green Teams are innovating with special events and capital investments. In 2005, Fairmont launched Eco-Innovations, locally focused projects like The Fairmont San Jose's Clean Air Drive, that encourage colleague learning and guest interaction (www.fairmont.com/environment).

This is the most incredible hotel company. They feature a collection of fabled castles, (I stayed in one in, Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac… amazing) secluded lodges, storied meeting places and modern retreats, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts opens the doors to some of the world's most celebrated addresses. With locations throughout eight countries, they have 44 distinctive hotels including The Fairmont San Francisco, The Fairmont Banff Springs and London's Savoy. What we love, is that they are committed to growing their portfolio of world-class hotels, (Fairmont will soon reflag five hotels in Kenya and anticipates the 2007 re-opening of New York's famed Plaza Hotel) all with an eye towards sustainable and earth responsible elements. Future Fairmont Hotels & Resorts also include locations in Cairo, Turks & Caicos, Abu Dhabi and Dubai's Palm Islands. As so many of you travel for not only pleasure, but for sustained periods of time for business, it's our pleasure to introduce you to a way to live “green” away from the control of your homes.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts: Tips for Traveling Green!
TRAVEL WELL
Before leaving home, make sustainable travel decisions. Choose accommodations known for their visible environmental policies and practices.
CHOOSE ACTIVITIES WISELY
Look for low-impact activities and those that offer an opportunity to actually learn about the area you're visiting.
LESS IS MORE
Carefully consider what you really need. Skip buying what you really don't. And when you do buy, purchase local food and crafts. Be careful with your souvenir selections and never buy those made from endangered plants or animals. Use reusable bags, totes, storage containers, napkins and towels.
ROAD TEST
U.S. driving habits alone account for 25 percent of greenhouse gases and 20 percent of the global total. Reduce your use by taking mass transit instead of a cab. When renting, select the most fuel-efficient model and support hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape.
EAT LOCAL
Patronize local restaurants. Order regional wines and beers. Choose seasonal specials instead of “flown in fresh daily.” It's been shown that the average meal travels approximately 1500 miles before it reaches your plate!
SWITCH OFF
The standby power consumption of each piece of electronics is often equivalent to a 100-watt bulb running non-stop. Put your laptop in fast-to-sleep mode. Unplug phone and camera chargers as soon as you're done using them. Guest lighting burns about 40 percent of hotel power, so turn out all the lights when you leave a room.
RECOGNIZE GREEN EFFORTS
Provide feedback to the businesses that you think are doing great work! Applaud their efforts by passing along compliments to owners, managers and staff. And don't be afraid to provide suggestions! Guest comments are a great way to streamline operational programs.
AND REMEMBER THE 3'S - REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
