“THE WEST WING,” “I ♥ HUCKABEES” AND “KING OF THE HILL” AMONG EMA WINNERS

Cindy Horn and Lyn Lear also Honored

 

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.— The West Wing, King of the Hill, Lilo & Stitch, I ♥ Huckabees, Trippin’, Farming The Seas and George Lopezwere winners at the 15 th Annual Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards held on Wednesday, October 19 th at The Ebell of Los Angeles. The EMA Awards recognize the creative teams behind television and film productions that expand public awareness of environmental issues. Celebrities from film, television and music were among the more than 1,000 guests at the gala event sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

The Honorable Al Gore delivered the Keynote Address and presented the EMA Board of Directors Ongoing Commitment Award. This prestigious Award was presented to Cindy Horn and Lyn Lear for their lifelong dedication to the environment and their humanitarian lifestyle. Cindy Horn and Lyn Lear are Co-Founders and Members of the Board of EMA. Ms. Horn was a Founding Trustee of Heal the Bay and The Archer School for Girls, and she has also served as Board Member for The Center for Environmental Education and The UCLA School of Public Health. Ms. Lear’s many activities on behalf of social issues and charitable causes include serving on the Board of Directors of the Rape Treatment Center, The Women’s Political Committee, Earth Day, and as an Associate Member on the Board of the Woodshole Oceanographic Institute.

The EMA Futures Award was given to Cassidy & Cody Horn and Ben Lear for their growing environmental commitment and activism. In keeping with the family tradition, 16 year-old Cassidy has also served the community by participating in coastal, river, and ice plant clean-ups and two summer internships at the Los Angeles Zoo, as well as a summer internship at the Environmental Media Association. Cody, now 17 years old, has been active with environmental efforts since she was a second grader at The John Thomas Dye School, where she was an eager member of the Green Team. She has participated in cleanups of local beaches and the Ballona Wetlands, as well as projects run by Tree People and Heal the Bay. Ben, age 17, has attended EMA events since he was a child and says that these experiences inspired him to become an environmentalist. He developed a passion for ocean conservancy after attending an Oceana benefit dinner a few years ago, and he has met with the President of Oceana to discuss means of attracting the younger generation to the issue. By giving these individuals the Futures Award, EMA respects the efforts of these young people and anticipates the amazing philanthropic years ahead of them.

The West Wing, “The Hubbert Peak” won for TV Episodic Drama. King of the Hill, “A Rover Runs Through It” was the winner in the TV Episodic Comedy category. The EMA Award for Children’s Television went to Lilo & Stitch, “Ploot.” I ♥ Huckabees was awarded in the Feature Film category. The Reality Television Award went to Trippin’, Episode #101 ( Nepal). Farming the Seas won the Documentary Award. EMA presented the Turner Award to George Lopez, “Prescription For Trouble.” The Turner Award recipient represents the television episode that best addressed the issues relating to population growth. Past winners of the Turner Award include My Wife & Kids, 3 rd Rock from the Sun, Boston Public, Chicago Hope, ER, Everwood, Home Improvement, NYPD Blue and That 70’s Show.

The EMA Green Seal Award was given to TV and film Productions and entertainment industry Corporate Offices that implemented the EMA Checklist of “green” choices for behind-the-scenes and every day office activities.  Participants were also acknowledged for any additional efforts that demonstrated environmental stewardship.  Winners were:  feature films Benchwarmers, Blood and Chocolate, GridIron Gang, Little Miss Sunshine, Lucky You, Poseidon; television mini-series 10.5: Apocalypse; daytime television Days Of Our Lives, and Charles Gooden’s Set Reuse Program at Touchstone TV.  Corporate Office winners were:  CAA, Endeavor, Variety, Act III, Double Feature Films, Gerber Pictures, Participant Productions, Pearl Pictures and the Lear Home Office.

Attendees included: Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Ed Begley, Jr., Bob Burnquist, Dan Castellaneta, Blythe Danner, Hillary Danner, Cameron Diaz, Deborah Farentino, Frances Fisher, Calista Flockhart, Harrison Ford, Soleil Moon Frye, Al Gore, Tony Hale, Daryl Hannah, Dave Koz, Christine Lahti, Wendie Malick, Nancy McKeon, Kathy Najimy, Mekhi Phifer, Kathleen Quinlan, Rob Reiner, Nicole Richie & DJ AM, Lisa Rinna & Harry Hamlin, Laura San Giacomo, Elizabeth Shue, Alicia Silverstone, Henry Simmons, Amy Smart, Yeardley Smith, Jeffrey Tambor, Nia Vardalos, Julie Warner and Constance Zimmer.

Unlike any other Hollywood Award Ceremony, this event merged culinary excellence with organic responsibility. In keeping with EMA’s commitment to honor and respect the planet, the dinner was an ambitious organic experience prepared by LA’s top celebrity chefs. The talents of Susan Feniger & Mary Sue Milliken (Border Grill & Ciudad), Akasha Richmond & Beth Ginsberg (Eaturna), Louis Pechan (The Ebell of Los Angeles), Benjamin Ford (Ford’s Filling Station), Suzanne Tracht (Jar), Joe Miller (Joe's), Govind Armstrong (Table 8), Christopher Blobaum (Wilshire) and for our vegan guests, Ann Gentry (Real Food Daily) continued EMA’s collaborative gourmet tradition. The chefs’ menus were prepared with food donated by Whole Foods Market.

The EMA Awards Ceremony was also a showcase for all things green --- from an environmentally themed silent auction, to the keepsake Tribute/Green Business Journals on 100% recycled paper with soy ink, and the use of cloth banners and signs. While elegant, the star-studded event succeeded in incorporating environmental concerns whenever possible. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps facilitated recycling & resource recovery. A concerted effort was made by all to conserve, reuse, renew and recycle. All food items not served were donated to Angel Harvest, Inc. and distributed to local shelters. A special lane of traffic was created in front of the venue to accommodate the many presenters and other attendees who arrived in Toyota or Lexus hybrids. The event continued EMA’s tradition of a hip, fun scene that also educates and inspires.
