EMA AWARD WINNERS

Red Hot Chili Peppers & Maroon 5 Honored

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.— Ice Age: The Meltdown, An Inconvenient Truth, Boston Legal, The Simpsons, The Wonder Pets, Darcy’s Wild Life, Break The Addiction: An Inconvenient Truth, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit were winners at the 16th Annual Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards held on Wednesday, November 8th at The Ebell of Los Angeles. The EMA Awards recognize the creative teams behind television and film productions as well as musicians that expand public awareness of environmental issues. Celebrities from film, television and music were among the more than 1,000 guests at the gala event sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Giuliana De Pandi from E! emceed the show.

The EMA Missions in Music Award was presented to the Red Hot Chili Peppers by Daryl Hannah. For 22 years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have shown a deep love and understanding for the value of environmental responsibility. They are one of the first bands to use Living Tree Paper, “We don’t have to cut down forests to make paper anymore,” starts a small note inside their latest CD. They were also instrumental in getting Warner Bros. Records to use paper made from hemp, flax and post consumer waste in their major CD releases.

Graham Nash presented Maroon 5 with the EMA Futures Award. Maroon 5, understanding that it’s their generation that will not only inherit but is ultimately responsible for the future of the planet, have begun their journey as leaders and role models. They drive hybrid automobiles and are currently investigating the feasibility of going “off the grid” by purchasing Solar thru EMA’s BP Solar Neighbor’s Program.

Ice Age: The Meltdown was awarded in the Feature Film category. An Inconvenient Truth won the Documentary Film Award. Boston Legal, “Finding Nimmo” won for TV Episodic Drama. The Simpsons, “The Bonfire Of The Manatees” was the winner in the TV Episodic Comedy category. The EMA Award for Children’s Animated Television went to The Wonder Pets, “Save The Tree.” Darcy’s Wild Life, “Trash Talk” won Children’s Live Action Television. The Reality Television Award went to Break The Addiction: An Inconvenient Truth. EMA presented the Turner Award to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, “Rockabye.” The Turner Award recipient represents the television episode that best addressed the issues relating to population growth. Past winners of the Turner Award include The George Lopez Show, My Wife & Kids, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Boston Public, Chicago Hope, ER, Everwood, Home Improvement, NYPD Blue and That 70’s Show.

EMA Green Seal Awards were given to TV and Film Productions and entertainment industry Corporate Offices that followed the EMA Checklist of "green" choices for behind-the-scenes and everyday office activities. Winners were feature films 10,000BC; Beerfest; No Reservations; One Part Sugar; The Dukes of Hazzard, The Beginning; The Great Buck Howard and television series My Name is Earl. Corporate Office winners were UTA, Dualstar Entertainment Group, Fifteen Minutes, Katalyst Films, and Participant Productions.

Attendees included: Col. Buzz Aldrin, Lance Bass, Ed Begley, Jr., Julie Bowen, Lizzy Caplan, Kristin Davis, Flea, Soleil Moon Frye, Harry Hamlin, Daryl Hannah, Happy the Cow, Lauren Holly, Chris Kattan, Anthony Kiedis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wendie Malick, Warren Moon, Graham Nash, Peter Reckell, Lisa Rinna, Rob Schneider, Henry Simmons, Lisa Simpson, Yeardley Smith, Mara Sokoloff, Bahar Soomekh, David Spade, Sherry Stringfield, Jeffrey Tambor, Robert Wagner, Wilmer Valderrama and Constance Zimmer.

Unlike any other Hollywood Award Ceremony, this event merged culinary excellence with organic responsibility. In keeping with EMA’s commitment to honor and respect the planet, the dinner was an ambitious organic experience prepared by LA’s top celebrity chefs. The talents of Susan Feniger & Mary Sue Milliken (Border Grill & Ciudad), Mark Peel (Campanile), Louis Pechan (The Ebell of Los Angeles), Benjamin Ford (Ford’s Filling Station), Donna Prizgintas (Horizon Organic), Suzanne Tracht (Jar), Joe Miller (Joe's), Akasha Richmond (SILK), Christopher Blobaum (Wilshire), Derek Harrison (Whole Foods Market), and for our vegan guests, Ann Gentry (Real Food Daily) continued EMA’s collaborative gourmet tradition. The chefs’ menus were prepared with food donated from the following corporate sponsors: BlackPearl Organic Seafood, Coleman Natural Foods, Earthbound Farm, Horizon Organic, SILK, Sustainable Seafoods LLC., and Whole Foods Market.

The EMA Awards Ceremony was also a showcase for all things green --- from an environmentally themed silent auction, to the keepsake Tribute/Green Business Journals on 100% recycled paper with soy ink, and the use of cloth banners and signs. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Inc. provided the gift bags made from recycled materials. While elegant and carbon neural, the star-studded event succeeded in incorporating environmental concerns whenever possible. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps facilitated recycling & resource recovery. A concerted effort was made by all to conserve, reuse, renew and recycle. All food items not served were donated to Angel Harvest, Inc. and distributed to local shelters. A special lane of traffic was created in front of the venue to accommodate the many presenters and other attendees who arrived in Toyota or Lexus hybrids. All guests walked the “Green Carpet.” The event continued EMA’s tradition of a hip, fun scene that also educates and inspires.
